Creating Class Groups in Teacher Gradebook

If you teach multiple sections of a class for which you regularly enter assignments and grades at the same time, you might want to create class groups in the system for efficiency of those processes. Adding class groups compiles each class section you choose into one cohesive gradesheet so you can enter scores from one screen. You can add and delete class groups at any time, even if there are assignments in the group.

With class groups set up, the individual gradesheets still operate independently. In order to combine sections into the same class group, the sections must have the same default Calculation Group, Grading Period Set, and Section Length.
There are two key differences between working in a class group gradesheet and a section gradesheet. These differences involve grade change requests and score entry. Grade change requests for completed grading periods must be completed from the gradesheets for individual Sections. They cannot be created from a class group gradesheet. When viewing a class group gradesheet, you will see all assignments attached to every section included in the class group. However, when scoring assignments, the score entry field is inactive for students that are not in the section to which the assignment is attached. The rest of the gradebook functionality remains the same as it does in an individual gradesheet.

To begin, we’ll navigate to the Class Groups feature within the Gradebook module. Let’s add a class group. We’ll enter a name for this class group. The name entered here will be what is displayed on the tile for the class group gradesheet. Next, we’ll select the sections that will be included in this class group. We can then choose to select the Hide Individual Sections On Gradebook Class List if we want to hide these classes from displaying on our gradebook class list. Procedure

As a teacher, creating class groups enables you to enter assignments and grades easily and quickly for a class that you teach multiple sections for. To begin, we’ll navigate to the Class Groups feature within the Gradebook module. Let’s add a class group. We’ll enter a name for this class group. The name entered here will be what is displayed on the tile for the class group gradesheet. Next, we’ll select the sections that will be included in this class group. We can then choose to select the Hide Individual Sections On Gradebook Class List if we want to hide these classes from displaying on our gradebook class list. Let’s click Save to complete the process. Now that you know how to create class groups, you can easily enter assignments and grades for classes that you teach multiple sections for.





  1. Select Menu > Teacher Access > Gradebook.
  2. Select Class Groups under Features.
  3. Verify you are in the correct Entity and school year by checking the information at the top left of the screen.
  4. Click Add Class Group near the top right of the screen.
  5. Complete the appropriate fields.

    Required fields are identified with an asterisk. You must complete required fields before you can save your work.

    1. Enter the Name for the class group.
    2. Enter the Sections to include in the class group or click the Magnifying Glass icon to choose from the drop-down list.

      You must have at least two sections selected to create a class group.

    3. Check the box for Hide Individual Sections On Gradebook Class List if appropriate.

      If you checked this box, the individual sections within the class group will no longer display in the Gradebook Class List.

      If you did not check this box, the individual sections within the class group and the class group displays in the Gradebook Class List.

  6. Choose one of the options near the top left of the screen to save your work.

    Save & Add AnotherSaves the class group and the Add Class Group screen refreshes so you can add another. A tile for the class group is automatically added to the Gradebook Class List. Tiles for class group gradesheets are twice the width of a regular class gradesheet tile.
    SaveSaves the class group and you return to the Class Group List, which displays the class group you created. A tile for the class group is automatically added to the Gradebook Class List. Tiles for class group gradesheets are twice the width of a regular class gradesheet tile.
