Family Scenarios

You can adjust family details in the system to address different family situations that may apply to your students. Some situations that may prompt you to modify the family setup on the Student Profile include guardians who separate but the student remains at the current address, guardians who separate but the student moves to the new guardian's address, custody transfers related to a foster care agency or the state, and students becoming their own guardians. The information provided below can help you evaluate how you should set up the new family or guardian information to best suit your student's situation.

Separating Family and Student Staying at Current Address

When guardians in a family separate and the student will be staying at the current address, you must create a second family for the guardian who is moving. This enables you to add a new address for the guardian who is moving if necessary. If you choose not to add a new address, you should remove the existing address from the new family. The new family should be listed as Family 2 to indicate that this is the guardian the student no longer lives with. If either guardian has a new partner, that individual can be added to the appropriate family.

The table below indicates how you should set up the new family to indicate the situation explained above.

Separating Family and Student Moving to New Address

The new family should be listed as Family 1 to indicate the student's place of residence. If either guardian has a new partner, that individual can be added to the appropriate family.

Processing Custody Transfer

When guardians transfer custody to another party, you must set up a new family with a new guardian for the student. This can be a person or an organization, such as the state or a foster care agency. The new family should be listed as Family 1 to indicate the student's place of residence.

Updating Family when Student Becomes Own Guardian

If a student becomes his or her own guardian, you must set up a new family with the student's name used as the guardian. The new family should be listed as Family 1 to indicate the student's place of residence, even if the address remains the same as the address listed for the previous first family.

The table below indicates how you should set up the new family to indicate the situation explained above.
